Sandaig Feasibility Study

This immediately breathtaking area of Scotland has been designated as part of the Knoydart National Scenic Area due to it’s outstanding natural beauty. The existing derelict dwelling sits in a scenic coastal position on the Sound of Sleat with views to Skye. In the Feasibility Study three levels of intervention are described. From minimal to maximal these options are based on three key concepts, the essence of which are derived from the natural surroundings. Each design is considered spatially, environmentally and technically.

Gavin Maxwell

The site is perhaps best known as the location of Gavin Maxwell’s (1914 – 1969) home: the Scottish naturalist and author was most renowned for his work with otters. His most famous work, ‘Ring of Bright Water’ (1960), was written at Sandaig, which he called ‘Camusfearna’. His house was destroyed by fire in 1968 and stood only a short distance from this building. Today a memorial lies on the site under which his ashes are buried. The historical significance of this site, coupled with Maxwell’s connection to Skye enhances the appeal of this remote location.

Option three : extrusion

The third proposal, the ‘extrusion’, aims to visually confront the visitor with intense feelings of proximity to all of the elements that are experienced at this rural location. The concept is realised by extruding the building along it’s length creating fully glazed areas between the new gable walls and the original envelope. This design retains the building’s original vernacular features: single storey, dual pitched roof and solid gable ends. The environmental strategy uses low carbon renewable technologies to minimise the carbon footprint of the proposal.
